At Kane Research website aesthetics is an important part of our website design process, how a visitor feels about a website is a crucial part of the visitor experience. The look and feel of a website can make a significant difference to website conversion rates. We never let website aesthetics get in the way of the websites primary function: to convert visitors into customers. Designing a website on behalf of a customer is a fine balance of form and function.

In recent years with the advent of web 2.0 you may have noticed a shift away from the traditional 3 column cluttered website designs to a more open and fresh website design approach. Modern website designers know that on any given web page you can get a few messages across strongly or fill the page up with information and get virtually no messages across to the visitor. Crisp clean and clear is the order of the day in modern website design with plenty of white space and large text to deliver the essence of the website.

There is a lot written about Search Engine Optimisation "SEO" and a lot of it is rubbish and urban myth.
These are the facts:

Google dominates the search engine market in the UK with around 90% of all searches in the United Kingdom are done using Google. Their nearest rivals yahoo and MSN struggle to get 4% each. Leaving under 2% for the thousands of other less know search engines.

In order for Google to maintain its dominance it must return the most relevant results when people search.
This is where designing a well optimised website comes in.

The Beauty in CSS Design - css Zen Garden

CSS Cascading Style Sheets The use of CSS has been instrumental in website design, it has basically split off the design elements such as the font size and positioning from the content "Words and Pictures" of your site.
This has allowed the web designer to see the design and experiment with design ideas regardless of the content.
In simple terms imagine you website has headings in bright red and there are 6 pages on your websites with 3 headings on each.
In the old days this would have been done in the HTML with something like font color="red" etc.
If the web designer wanted to see what blue looked like in the design then they'd have to change it in 18 places.
But with a CSS based design all the designer needs to do is change the CSS and its applied to all the headings on all the pages instantly.
This is how CSS has opened up the design process - its so easy for the designer to try new design ideas.

Dave Shea, a web designer from Vancouver has a website devoted to CSS design in which the HTML page must remain exactly the same but designers are invited to experiment with the design using only the CSS.
The website is a wonderful illustration of the power of CSS based website design and serves as a show case for many web developers designs.

Small Business Website Design

You can split small business websites in to two categories e-business websites and normal business websites.
An e-business website in layman's terms typically sells items online and processes the payment online.

E-business involves business processes that span the entire value chain: electronic purchasing, supply chain management, Electronic order processing and customer service. A Business can't realistically operate an e business website without having all this infrastructure in place.
